How to layer a decal with registration marks

Sep 20th 2017

Ever Wondered how to get multi colored decals to line up correctly, every time?

Here is a video of a simple way to put together a multi-colored decal using registration marks. Each layer is placed together using registration marks that are placed in the same exact spot on each layer. This creates an easy way to place the layers together ensuring that that colors are lined up perfectly.

When layering a decal with registration marks, I use these products:

The Oracal 651 vinyl that you'll see in the video below is perfect for signs, vehicles, decals, and anything else that you want to last. We sell Oracal 651 in 12" x 12", 12" x 24", 12"x 5 ft, 12"x 10 ft and 12" x 30 ft (ten yards) lengths.

The TransferRite 1310 Ultra Clear transfer tape makes layering a breeze because of how clear it is. We have it available on our site for sale in 4", 6", 8" and 12" rolls all being 300 feet long!

How to Layer a Decal with Registration Marks in 5 Easy Steps

  1. Apply application tape to the top layer of your decal. For this project I used the Transfer Rite 1310 Ultra Clear Transfer Tape for the top layer.
  2. Remove the backing on your top layer. I find the best way to do this is to flip your decal over and peel the backing off of the transfer tape versus peeling the transfer tape off the backing.
  3. Put the backing back on top of the decal exposing just the registration marks at the top of the decal. That way when you go to layer it, the only thing your worrying about is lining up your registration marks. The rest of the decal won't touch.
  4. Line up the top layer registration marks with the second layer registration marks and remove the backing from the top layer. I find it easiest to remove the backing from the top down and squeegee the top layer to the second layer.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the bottom layer of your decal and you now have a 3 layered decal!
